CHAPMAN UNIVERSITY FOWLER SCHOOL OF LAW seeks a Dean of the School of Law.

Chapman University, a private university recognized for its culture of innovation as well as excellence in research and cutting-edge teaching, is extending its search for candidates for the position of Dean of the Dale E. Fowler School of Law.

Founded in 1995, the Dale E. Fowler School of Law (Fowler Law) based in Orange County, California is one of the premier private law schools in Southern California and consistently recognized as one of the top law schools in the nation for practical training. The School’s next Dean will inherit an outstanding market position, a thriving enrollment, and a community united in the shared goal of providing an outstanding legal education. The School aims to build on the momentum generated in recent years by record fundraising – including an extraordinarily generous $55 million naming gift; continuous improvement in U.S. News and World Report rankings; and increases in the academic profile and diversity of the incoming class. With these tailwinds, Fowler Law seeks to extend its reputation throughout California, regionally, and nationally through strategic management of its opportunities, resources, and excellent alumni partners.

Fowler Law offers a collaborative, personalized, and rigorous education that makes students more practice-ready than their counterparts at other schools. Ranked 16th in the country for practical training, students have access to a wide array of experiential learning opportunities, including clinics, externships, practice-ready labs, and practice-oriented writing classes. With one of the best faculty-to-student ratios among ABA-approved law schools, Fowler Law offers smaller class sizes and greater access to a distinguished faculty both in and out of the classroom.

The changes to the student body also reflect the upward momentum the school has been experiencing. Recent first-year classes have seen dramatic increases in incoming credentials and diversity. The median LSAT score of incoming classes has increased 5 points in recent years, with the median undergraduate GPA increasing over a third of point. Additionally, today, 52% of the incoming class are from underrepresented backgrounds; 28% are first-generation college students. Also notable are Fowler Law's outcomes. The bar preparation program, offered at no extra cost, has resulted in consistently strong bar pass results on the most challenging bar exam in the country. Fowler Law has set record employment for their graduates in each of the last three years. Graduates are prepared to make a lasting difference in their communities as national and regional leaders, lawyers, and innovative entrepreneurs launching new businesses and legal ventures.

Fowler Law seeks an extraordinary candidate for the deanship who is capable of capitalizing on Fowler Law's already strong assets to further its mission to deliver an outstanding legal education while also honoring its commitment to legal ethics, service, and diversity. All applicants must have a J.D. or equivalent and must have the necessary qualifications for tenure as a Professor of Law at the Fowler School of Law. More information can be found at www.wittkieffer.com.

WittKieffer is assisting Chapman University in this search. Application materials can be submitted through WittKieffer’s candidate portal or by email. Confidential nominations and inquiries can be directed to Werner Boel, LL.M. Shelley Arakawa, J.D., and Ashlee Winters at chapmanlawdean@wittkieffer.com.

THE UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT SCHOOL OF LAW seeks candidates for a Director of a clinic focused on transactional practice, beginning August 23, 2023.

This position can take two different forms. The first is a non-tenure track faculty position subject to the Law School’s Policy on Long-Term Contracts for Non-Tenure Track Clinical Faculty, which complies with ABA Standard 405(c) by providing security of position, perquisites, and participation in faculty governance similar to tenure. The second is a tenure-track version of the position, for candidates who would like more emphasis placed on scholarly capacity and commitment as components of their work and criteria for evaluation.

Whether the position is of the non-tenure-track or tenure-track mold, the person filling it may be hired at the rank of assistant, associate, or full clinical professor, depending on experience. The UConn School of Law is especially interested in candidates who will add to the diversity of our faculty. We welcome applications from women, individuals with disabilities, veterans, and other individuals underrepresented in the legal academy, as well as candidates with experiences, backgrounds, and viewpoints that will enrich the diversity of our community.

We have a rich tradition of transactional clinical offerings at UConn Law, in tandem, historically, with external organizations based in the Hartford area. Moving forward, we are excited to expand our “in-house” opportunities—among other things, because it will help satisfy the considerable demand among our students for transactional experience during law school. We are open to all manner of transactional work, connected to any substantive area of law. Whatever the clinic’s exact focus, the Director will join a robust and collegial team of clinical faculty, focused on criminal justice, immigration, and tax, among other offerings.

Position duties include planning and teaching clinic classes and supervising clinic casework, with substantial opportunity to engage in program design and development of further initiatives and growth in clinical programs. The Director also participates in public service activities; serves on faculty committees; counsels students; and is encouraged to teach additional courses outside the clinic consistent with the Director’s availability and interests and curricular need.

For the non-tenure-track version of the position, opportunities and support for scholarly research and writing will certainly be provided, although other contributions to legal education, the legal profession, and society are equally valued in awarding long-term contract status. For the tenure-track version, there will be a greater emphasis placed on scholarly output and engagement in the evaluation of promotion and tenure.

Founded in 1881, UConn is a Land Grant and Sea Grant institution and member of the Space Grant Consortium. It is the state’s flagship institution of higher education and includes a main campus in Storrs, CT, four regional campuses throughout the state, and 13 Schools and Colleges, including a Law School in Hartford, and Medical and Dental Schools at the UConn Health campus in Farmington. The University has approximately 10,000 faculty and staff and 32,000 students, including nearly 24,000 undergraduates and over 8,000 graduate and professional students. UConn is a Carnegie Foundation R1 (highest research activity) institution, among the top 25 public universities in the nation. Through research, teaching, service, and outreach, UConn embraces diversity and cultivates leadership, integrity, and engaged citizenship in its students, faculty, staff, and alumni. UConn promotes the health and well-being of citizens by enhancing the social, economic, cultural, and natural environments of the state and beyond. The University serves as a beacon of academic and research excellence as well as a center for innovation and social service to communities. UConn is a leader in many scholarly, research, and innovation areas. Today, the path forward includes exciting opportunities and notable challenges. GEORGETOWN LAW seeks applications for a tenure-track or tenured lateral or entry-level faculty to direct a civil litigation clinic starting during the 2023-24 academic year.

Georgetown Law is especially interested in candidates to teach a civil litigation clinic with a focus on access to justice and economic justice for low- and moderate-income individuals and communities, including taking cases involving consumer debt, consumer financial transactions, employment law, housing, and public benefits. The clinic could involve some policy work with local, state, and federal protection agencies but the bulk of the clinic’s work should be civil litigation with a focus on teaching students litigation skills. The appropriate scope of clinic work would respond to the D.C. Access to Justice Commission’s 2019 report calling for increased availability of civil legal services in D.C. and expanding systemic work to close the justice gap.

The Faculty Appointments Committee is particularly interested in candidates with prior civil litigation experience in the relevant practice areas and prior clinical teaching experience. Candidates must demonstrate a record of strong academic performance and either an excellent scholarly record (if a lateral candidate) or excellent potential for scholarly achievement (if an entry-level candidate).

Georgetown Law has operated its top-ranked in-house clinical program for more than 50 years. Through this program, students learn the practical art of lawyering while providing quality legal representation to under-represented individuals and organizations. We offer 19 different clinics, and more than 325 law students participate in our clinics every year.

Candidates should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, references, a diversity statement, and a scholarly agenda to Alicia Plerhoples, Associate Dean of Clinics and Experiential Education at aep65@law.georgetown.edu. Georgetown Law has a strong commitment to diversity among its faculty and encourages applications from women, racial and ethnic minorities, individuals with disabilities, and veterans.
