The University of Tennessee College of Law invites applications from scholars, teachers, and practitioners in the field of advocacy and dispute resolution for the position of Director of the Center for Advocacy & Dispute Resolution, along with an academic appointment, to commence no later than August 1, 2025.  The full position announcement is available here

The Center for Advocacy & Dispute Resolution was established with a commitment to providing unparalleled training to law students, offering numerous simulation-based courses and a Concentration in Advocacy & Dispute Resolution. 

The Director of the Center for Advocacy & Dispute Resolution will have a 12-month appointment and will report directly to the Dean. The Director will play a critical role in preserving the core components of the Center’s curriculum and programs and in developing and executing an ambitious and innovative vision for the Center’s future.

The selected Director candidate will also have an academic appointment appropriate to the candidate’s qualifications.

Qualifications

Candidates must hold a J.D. or equivalent law degree at the time of application and have an impressive record of experience in the areas of advocacy and/or dispute resolution, whether as a lawyer, judge, or law teacher. 

Preferred qualifications include teaching experience; a record of scholarship (which may include law review articles or shorter practitioner-focused pieces); strong connections to the bench and bar; forward-thinking views about the curriculum needed to prepare students for modern litigation and ADR practice; experience leading, collaborating, and building programs; and an appreciation for the public interest career goals of many of our advocacy and dispute resolution students. 

The candidate must also have the qualifications appropriate for one of the following academic appointments:

·  Non-Tenure Track Appointment. Candidates for Teaching Assistant Professor must show promise for excellence in areas of responsibility assigned to them. Candidates for Teaching Associate Professor must have demonstrated excellence in areas of responsibility assigned to them. Candidates for Teaching Professor must have demonstrated a consistent record of excellence in areas of responsibility assigned to them. 

·  Tenure-Track Appointment. Candidates for Assistant Professor should have a demonstrated potential to succeed in the areas of teaching, scholarship, and service such that they will one day be a candidate for promotion and tenure. Candidates for Associate Professor should have a demonstrated record of thoughtful and effective teaching, insightful scholarship, and meaningful engagement in service. Candidates for Professor should have a record of teaching excellence, exceptional scholarly achievement, and distinguished service.
