Washington University School of Law invites applications for a visiting clinical faculty position as Director of its Intellectual Property Clinic. The position will be for an initial appointment of one year with the possibility of extension. The Clinic is one of the School’s twenty outstanding law clinics and externships (see https://law.wustl.edu/academics/clinical-education-program/ ). The Clinic, through its second and third-year law students, provides legal advice and services to clients with respect to copyright, patent, trademark, trade secret, and right of publicity matters.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- The Director is expected to oversee all aspects of the Clinic, including the teaching of students (through one-on-one tutorials and a weekly seminar), supervision of and responsibility for student casework, identification and selection of clients, and administration of the office and staff.
- The Director will also teach other courses and assist other law school programs as needed.
Required Qualifications
Candidates must possess a J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school and must be admitted or eligible to practice law in Missouri (i.e., must be a member of the Missouri Bar, able to become a member within six months of starting the position, or eligible for a certificate to supervise students as a law teacher pursuant to Missouri Supreme Court Rule 13.06).
Preferred Qualifications
- Possess a strong academic record.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- An ability to build and maintain relationships with both students and community/professional partners; and an interest or experience in intellectual property law.
- Experience practicing law, outstanding legal research and writing skills, and promise as a teacher and mentor for law students.
- Experience in clinical teaching is not required, but would be desirable.
