Golden Gate University School of Law invites applications for a Visiting Associate Professor and Clinical Staff Attorney for a one-year appointment to teach in the Women’s Employment Rights Clinic at Golden Gate University School of Law.

This position will have primary responsibility for day-to-day supervision of student clinicians, will handle and develop clinic litigation, policy work and community collaboration, and will assist in teaching the clinic seminar. In addition, the staff attorney will assist in administrative responsibilities, including student outreach and recruitment and other duties as assigned by the Clinic Director. Finally, the staff attorney as a member of the faculty will perform regular faculty duties including participation at faculty meetings, participation on faculty committees, and support for law school recruitment efforts, and outreach.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates must have a JD degree;

Bar membership in California;

Must have at least six years of litigation experience and be an experienced litigator, with skills and willingness to take primary responsibility in Clinic cases;

Experience working with low-income communities, immigrant communities and vulnerable populations strongly preferred;

Prior clinical teaching experience and/or experience in supervising law clerks strongly preferred;

Excellent written and oral communication skills;

High degree of professionalism in all aspects of lawyering, including in dealings with staff, colleagues, and opponents; and

Strong organizational skills and work ethic.

The Harvard Legal Aid Bureau is a student-run civil legal aid organization committed to providing free representation to low-income and marginalized communities in the Greater Boston area. DESCRIPTION

The Harvard Legal Aid Bureau seeks a Fellow for the 2021-2022 academic year. The Fellow will represent clients, partner with Clinical Instructors (CIs) in supervising practicing law students, and work to develop and strengthen community lawyering partnerships in one or more of our three primary practice areas: Wage and Hour, Family, and Housing. More specifically the Fellow will:

●Maintain an active caseload and represent clients in matters pertaining to Wage and Hour, Family, and/or Housing law;

●Foster relationship with HLAB’s partners in the Greater Boston area by attending community meetings, communicating with leaders, and creating new community lawyering initiatives (depending on the interests and qualifications of the Fellow, community lawyering initiatives could include streamlining intakes, developing strategies for supporting the building of collective power, and advancing shared policy goals);

●Learn clinical teaching methodology, under the supervision of the Bureau’s CIs, while developing and refining teaching and practice approaches;

●Meet regularly with other teaching staff; assist in conducting case rounds and seminars on practice skills and substantive law; participate in other office-wide projects, including orientation, training, and outreach events;

●Assist the CIs in the supervision of students by meeting regularly with students, helping them to prepare and strategize for their casework, reviewing students' written work, providing regular, detailed feedback to students, and delivering instruction in basic legal skills; and,

●Bring creativity and initiative to develop projects that build on the Fellow’s talents and interests, while maintaining alignment with the Bureau's mission.

The Fellow may be asked to:

●Help the Bureau refine and improve its data collection and outcome measures, in order to promote the Bureau’s racial and economic justice mission; and,

●Spearhead capacity-building initiatives (in the past, for example, two fellows worked with the Family practice to build the Bureau’s capacity to handle Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) cases).

During summer months and other periods of student absence, the Fellow might be entirely or partially responsible for additional case coverage, including communication with clients, motions, and trials. Some evening and occasional weekend hours are expected. The Fellow will report to the Bureau’s Faculty Director and/or a Clinical Instructor in the Fellow’s primary practice area.

Basic Qualifications

Candidates must:

●At or shortly after the time of hiring, be admitted to the Massachusetts bar or eligible to practice under Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Rule 3:03 or Rule 3:04. A candidate qualified only under Rule 3:03 must commit to taking the Massachusetts Bar exam (or another bar exam that will qualify the candidate for practice under Rule 3:04) and the MPRE as soon as possible;

●Have 0 - 5 years of legal experience; and,

●Have experience mentoring or exposure to a strong mentoring environment within a clinical legal setting

●Possess experience (as a lawyer, clinical law student, or summer intern) in at least one of the areas of law practiced at the Bureau.

Candidates must also be able to thrive in a high-volume civil legal aid litigation practice and in a student- run organization. The ability to work sensitively with a diverse multicultural population of clients, students, and staff is essential.

The Clinical Fellows Program is designed to allow attorneys to explore the possibility of a career in clinical teaching and fully support them in that endeavor. Michigan Clinical Fellows gain valuable experience and mentoring in clinical pedagogy and in their substantive area of practice. Students also engage in advocacy and complex criminal litigation on behalf of court-involved youth.  Students in the clinic, with the support of the faculty member and fellow, develop skills in trial advocacy and litigation practice, client counseling and negotiation, as well as an understanding of juvenile law, criminal procedure and adolescent development.  In additional to substantive law and lawyering skills, students are encouraged to reflect on their practice, their identities as fledgling legal professionals, and to examine and critique the youth and criminal systems in which they are engaging.

THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN LAW Clinical Fellows Program seeks applicants for a fellowship in its Veterans Legal Clinic (VLC). This is a two-year appointment with the possibility of extension for a third year.

The Clinical Fellows Program is designed to allow attorneys to explore the possibility of a career in clinical teaching and fully support them in that endeavor. Michigan Clinical Fellows gain valuable experience and mentoring in clinical pedagogy and in their substantive area of practice. Their duties include clinical teaching and student supervision in conjunction with a clinic director, and participation in the operation and development of the clinic in which they teach. Support is provided for personal and professional development and scholarship.

The VLC is a general civil litigation clinic that represents veterans and their immediate families in a broad array of civil legal matters. These matters include, but are not limited to, landlord-tenant cases, fraud actions, disability rights claims, family law matters, personal injury cases, contract disputes, employment discrimination claims, and military discharge upgrades. As with all Michigan Law clinics, VLC students take first-chair responsibility for VLC cases under the supervision of the VLC fellow and the VLC director.

Required Qualifications

The successful applicant will have a minimum of 3 years of experience in civil litigation, a strong interest in clinical teaching, a demonstrated commitment to public interest lawyering, and the potential for scholarship and success as a clinical teacher.  Experience with the veterans community and/or veterans issues is a plus but not a requirement. Candidates must hold a J.D. degree and be eligible for licensure in Michigan.
